FAQs
How does course material vary from year to year?
Course material is updated yearly based on recent research and clinical findings in obesity medicine, user feedback, and communications with the American Board of Obesity Medicine. The overall structure of our courses remains consistent unless we find a considerable adjustment is needed. In 2024, we adjusted our Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment course, expanding the course from a three-day to a four-day course to accommodate four long case study sessions. In 2024, we also modified our Review for the Obesity Certification Exam course to include a session on board review questions.
What is the difference between live and on-demand courses?
Live courses are held in real-time, allowing participants to engage in Q&A sessions with the lecturers. Participants must claim CME credit within 30 days of the course end date. Course materials, including video lectures and associated PDFs, are available for participants to review and claim credit. For study purposes, online video access is provided for 36 months after the course ends.
Our on-demand courses feature pre-recorded lectures, corresponding lecture PDFs, and self-assessment questions to help you monitor your learning progress. You can review the lectures at your convenience and pace. It's essential to complete the course material, quiz, and evaluation and claim CME credit before the course expiration date. The course materials will be available to those who completed the course for 36 months after the course expiration date.
When are live courses scheduled?
Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment is generally held in March or May each year. The course is available in person at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center Campus as well as virtually.
Review for the Obesity Certification Exam is held virtually each year, anywhere from mid-summer to early-September.
Visit our Columbia Cornell Live Courses webpage for information on upcoming live courses.
When can I register for live courses?
Registration for the Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment course typically opens in November or December each year. Registration for the Review for the Obesity Certification Exam usually opens between March and May.
The course registration links will be posted on our Columbia Cornell Live Courses webpage once they are available.
Will combining the LIVE Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment Course and the ON-DEMAND Additional Topics for Advanced Study Course provide me with all the CME I need to apply for the American Board of Obesity Medicine Exam?
Yes. Combining these two courses will provide you with over 60 ABOM-designated GROUP ONE credits, fulfilling the CME requirement to take the American Board of Obesity Medicine certification exam.
If you sign up for the live event, keep an eye out for an email containing a discount code for the Obesity: Additional Topics for Advanced Study On Demand course.
Do participants of the LIVE Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment course receive a discount for the ON-DEMAND Additional Topics course?
Participants of our LIVE Obesity: Etiology Prevention and Treatment course will receive an email containing a registration discount code for the Obesity: Additional Topics for Advanced Study On Demand. This course is updated yearly, and the timing of email notifications varies.

What is the difference between the on-demand two-course and three-course packages?
The two-course package includes the Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment, and Obesity: Additional Topics for Advanced Study courses. In addition to those two courses, our three-course package also includes our Review for the Obesity Certification Exam course.
Both course packages satisfy the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) requirement of at least 60 hours of CME credit on the topic of obesity needed to apply for the board exam. Our courses count as ABOM GROUP ONE credits.
If you are unsure when you're going to sit for the board exam, we recommend purchasing our two-course package and taking the Review for the Obesity Certification Exam course in the same year you plan on sitting for the board exam. (Disclaimer: Our exam review course is generally held in late summer/early fall. If this does not work with your study timeline, we recommend the three-course package.) For past Columbia Cornell Obesity Medicine (CCOM) course participants, the pricing structure for the Review for the Obesity Certification Exam is the same in the three-course package as it is individually.
