Retired IHN Faculty member Sally Lederman has passed away

We are saddened to share with you the passing of our friend and colleague Dr. Sally Ann Lederman.

Dr. Lederman graduated from Brooklyn College and received her MS in Nutrition from the IHN in 1976, and her PhD in the IHN’s Nutritional and Metabolic Biology Program in 1980.  She joined the faculty at Mailman School of Public Health in 1981, in the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health as a special lecturer, and started teaching in the IHN’s MS program in 1983.

It is difficult to capture Dr. Lederman’s many contributions to the IHN – she oversaw the Thesis Planning and Research Methods course and helped our master’s students complete their theses with careful editing and attention to detail.  She supported the MS program director beginning in 2006 with advice on recruitment, thesis planning, and mentored many of the IHN students during their projects.

Sally was a role model, a generous mentor, and a guiding force for so many of the IHN students. She was a dedicated individual with great scientific, intellectual, and personal integrity. And she will be remembered for her groundwork in expanding and clarifying the thesis process for the MS program, which distinguishes and separates this program from other nutrition programs in the United States.

On behalf of the IHN Columbia community, we offer our deepest condolences to her daughter Leandra, and her son, Evin, and to her family, friends, and loved ones.

Details on the family's plans for a memorial for Sally will be finalized by June 10, 2022. If you wish to send your condolences, please contact her daughter Leandra Lederman at leandra2848@aol.com
